    Fit for Real People

    Song Kyung

Even though Jane"s instructions were amazingly clear it took my little beginner brain actually seeing the movement - after that it was so easy and I"m a Bias convert! Sorry for the picture below, I know how eerie (and boring) faceless pictures are but I"m not up to posting my silly facials on the Internet yet... give me time!

So what do I like about it?

Well it"s really pretty, and Tasia"s instructions were invaluable for a beginner. Also it seems like one of those patterns that you could make loads of little adjustments to make each blouse unique. Look at me! Talking like I know about sewing. I say it because I"ve seen a few alterations like Jane"s below and they"re really cute - I"m even going to attempt my own!

What don"t I like about it?

My complaints are currently limited to my own talent. I found it a bit difficult to work with such slippery fabric, especially when it came to cutting. The only other thing was fitting - My abilities of tissue fitting are horrible but I take zero blame for that - I"m currently under the impression you need to have as many arms as Shiva, a gazillion-jointed-spine, and eyes in the back of your head (or a dress form worth AU$450) to be able to fit on your own body. So I"ve caved and just ordered "Fit for Real People" hopefully those divas on the front cover will show me how to wear shoulder pads with pride!

    What about doing French seams?

Eep! After doing French seams on the shoulders I got totally distracted by my bias-tape dilemma and forgot to do them! From my limited experience they were super easy, and they look much nicer than my other seams as I kick it old-school and don"t have a Serger... that"s just how I roll.

    Would I make it again?

Heck yeah Grizzly Bear! I"ve already got my fabric and I"m going to make a few adjustments to the pattern so it fits better, not to mention do it a little "neater" this time. I might even be adventurous and make a few minor changes with the detail? I"m thinking buttons, because who doesn"t like buttons? If you want to see more you can check out the Flickr Group, but I just had to point out the one below because I think she"s hot stuff.

  • Bachelorette Parties - Idea #11: Atlantic City

Bachelorette Parties - Idea #11: Atlantic City
    bachelorette party Atlantic City
Bachelorette Parties - Idea #11: Atlantic City
Today"s guest post comes from Jamie Stone, editor of Queen of a Quarterlife Crisis. Jamie used JSG"s past bachelorette party ideas to plan her trip to the Chelsea in Atlantic City. Love!

    Who is getting married?
My best friend since high school, Dawn

Why did you pick A.C. for your destination?
It was between Atlantic City and the Hamptons. We actually tried to book a cute motel in Montauk first but then realized that they all have three night minimum stays during the peak summer season, so A.C. it was! I had been a few times over the years and we thought it would be a good choice since it’s considered the Vegas of the east coast.

Why did you pick your hotel?
Well, I was actually perusing The JSG section for bachelorette parties and girl’s getaways when I came across The Chelsea in two of your posts! It sounded perfect- Dawn (the bride) isn’t really a gambler and it sounded like some kind of chic Los Angeles hotel between the salt water pool and the amazing restaurant and lounge. The other girls thought it sounded great as well and we crammed five girls into one room, making it decently affordable.

How would you rate the hotel?
I thought the hotel was fabulous. I love the 50s/retro-style décor and it’s definitely the trendiest hotel that I’ve seen in A.C.- no old people in track suits allowed!

What did you like the most about the Bachelorette Party?
We took the ACES train down from the city (another JSG recco!) and those 2 hours and 40 minutes were probably some of the funniest of the trip. We bought first class tickets (oh yes, we’re classy like that) which includes waiter service for drinks and snacks. The bride opened up some of her gifts on the train and tried on some of the lingerie over her clothes…it was hilarious. (and sadly, the bride would also kill me if I let anyone see the pics, sorry!)
    bride at bachelorette party

What surprised you the most about the destination?
I was obsessed with the idea of their salt water pool but sadly, it was deemed the “kiddie pool” while we were there. Not that the rooftop pool wasn’t amazing (it was) but I really wanted to swim in salt water!

    Funniest moment?
I mean, it definitely has to be the male strip club. Had to do it! The bride was nervous at first but by the end of the show, she was totally into it! We bought her the special VIP package that gets you a private lap dance and a photo will all the guys. It’s slightly disgusting but good, honest fun.

Oh and also when the bride wore a white dress with her "bride" veil and people on the boardwalk kept saying "congratulations!" to her...thinking, we assume, that her white cotton dress from Express was her ACTUAL wedding dress and she had just gotten married. Seriously!

What didn"t you like about it?
Wrangling a group of girls, no matter how old or how good of friends, is always a task. I’m a type-A crazy person who tends to move fast and get ready quickly so waiting around for two or three people who “forgot” to put on deodorant or “forgot” their cell phone can be infuriating, to say the least. The bride and I are very similar that way and by the end of the weekend we were both saying “why do I feel like we’re constantly waiting for everyone?”
    girls at a bachelorette party

Any advice for ladies planning a bachelorette party to A.C.?
This was my first time planning a bachelorette party but I would say planning an A.C. version is probably comparable to planning one in Vegas or NYC. Just do a little research (like how I checked the JSG) and try to find things you know the bride will like. Like I mentioned, Dawn isn’t a gambler so I knew staying in a hotel like the Chelsea (that doesn’t have a casino) wouldn’t matter to her.

As I"m sewing my 1950"s Violet Wiggle Dress it reminded me of the set of photographs I once saw on the LIFE archives. A few of you know I"ve been to Russia a few times, once when I was 15 with my very adventurous father (Russia was his type of vacation) and then after high school with the intent to study Russian History. To make a long story short I ended up being very homesick and my stay was brief. Still, it"s one of my favorite places in the world and I"ve had the privilege to see. Since then I love learning about Russian history, the good and the bad, and seeing it through art and photography are one of my favorite things to do.

In 1959 the Soviet Union decided to get with the times and host some fashion shows. Does Yves Saint Laurent"s Russian Collection ring a bell? Dior decided to bring their "New Look" straight to the people at GUM, which is like Russia"s version of Galleria, located directly in Red Square. Back then it had more sensible shops for the working comrades, today it hosts over 200 luxury brands like Dior.

Dior had it their mind just to walk with the people at GUM, who by their expressions seemed horrified and curious all at the same time.

I"m kind of loving the floral dresses that nearly all of the women are wearing. Kind of wish I stuck around Moscow for a few days more just to do some vintage shopping. Wait while I add it to my bucket list.

    On Our Radar: Public Chicago
Ian Schrager"s redo of the Ambassador Hotel in Chicago previewed this week. Public is a new line and concept of hotels that Schrager envisions delivers luxury service and amenities to the masses. Public doesn"t scrimp on style and there won"t be frustrating charges like $5 Hershey bars and $20 pots of coffee. Schrager believes people are "sick of slick" and want a return to value and quality in the hotels they frequent.

The existing Pump Room restaurant was also reworked by chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten with a farm to table approach and service at all meal times. At night the Pump Room turns into a glam 30"s/40"s supper club.

Preview rates start around $150 per night. The grand opening is slated for October.

Smart’s Future of the City Continues

Copyright by smart | Design Aram Dikiciyan
smart urban stage is a global online project dealing with the term FUTURE OF THE CITY. We ask pioneers from metropolises around the world to question the urban status quo. the results are visions, ideas and solutions for sustainable lifestyles, modern social systems and forward-looking developments in the fields of architecture, design and technology. the worldwide event series is exhibiting ideas and solutions of forward thinking future makers. the brand behind this online project is the car manufacturer smart, which hosted special events throughout Europe during the last two years.

Now smart initiated the online project FUTURE OF THE CITY. Within their Q&A series allrounder Marcelo Burlon asked photographer Aram Dikiciyan: How would a city look like without concrete? His answer: A city without concrete is bathed in light.
Burlon: A few years ago I was in the north of Brazil, in a little village called Jericoacoara and then I moved to Praia de Pipa. In this time the streets were made out of sand and all the little houses were out of wood. All was full of trees and the atmosphere during the evening is something really unbelievable. I imagined a city a hundred times bigger than this little village with the same concept. Imagine how the summer will be without all that concrete. How the kids will grow up and the older people will enjoy their last years.
Dikiciyan:Throughout the life over there he found that things are generally rather unpredictable but definitely either interesting to thrilling or surprising to wondrous thus a little predictable then again. He dealt with the inconceivable which allowed him to catch a glimpse of what he called then the futurity of his own: Fragments of what could be or how it could look like. He never knew exactly what it was but it provided an insight into what could have been. So what would he have imagined about tomorrow? Life to consist of dark days and bright nights? Or rather bright days and blinding nights? Reflective surfaces, glowing and pumping? Intermittent pulsating conducting the rhythm of time? Busy veins but orderly? Kindness? Goodness? Awkwardness? Frequent beauty?
Aram Dikiciyan was born in 1974 in West-Berlin. He moved to Tokyo in 2004, where he has been resident ever since. Exhibitions of his work have been held in Tokyo, Berlin and Hong Kong. He has been represented by Berlin Gallery Camera Work since 2008.

  • Bachelorette Parties- Idea #18: Vegas Review

Bachelorette Parties- Idea #18: Vegas Review
Our girlfriend, Shelly, just returned from her bachelorette party in Vegas and was a good sport sharing her experience. We only wish we"d been there for the fun!

Why did you pick Vegas? Fav place to people watch by the pool and know you will be eating at a fabulous restaurant and have many types of entertainment venues to choose from in the evening (from dance clubs, to irish pubs, to more formal shows if that’s your thing..oh yeah, and the shopping….you can’t beat the shopping!).

    The Venetian
Why did you pick the Venetian? Love the suites concept especially for girls sharing rooms, lots of room and phenomenal service. The pool is adjacent to the Tao beach club pool so you can watch the crowd without actually going INTO the crowd if you’re not in the mood for an over-crowded overly warm pool environment (ick).

How would you rate your stay there? A 10, we all got spa services compliments of my groom so given that Canyon Ranch is the largest spa in the U.S. we definitely enjoyed taking advantage of it!

What was the most fun, best restaurant, club, pool etc on your trip? I have to say the cucumber vodka shots at the sushi restaurant (Yellowtail at the Bellagio) we hit on Friday night were the best shots I’ve ever had. Best food was at Lavo, loved the Kobe Beef meatball appetizer that I had as my meal which was PLENTY of food!

Was there a funniest moment? Too many to count, one of my favs was the guy talking to us in the pool who was wearing his leather flip flops in the pool that kept coming off and every time he popped out of the water he asked “so, where are you girls from??”…about 30 times.

Any other advice? Don’t take the limo service with “Johnny” in his souped up Escalade, he drives crazy fast and talks 800 miles a minute about the dregs of Vegas society and frankly , none of us really need to know that much about the seedy side of Vegas…keep it light!

Thanks Shelly! We also love the Venetian and its sister property, the Palazzo. Join their "Grazie" network to receive special offers on hotel stays. Currently, they"re offering an end of summer special to Grazie members with suites for $129 per night with a $20 dining credit and 2 for 1 cocktails at the Fusion lounge.
